Busy, busy, busy

Monday and Tuesday were spent moving daughter #2 into her new apartment. She will have a roommate but my daughter had to move in early for some pre-student teaching activities. The living room will eventually have a futon/sofa instead of the butterfly chair. The denim slipcovered chair was one of our garage sale finds as were the plant stand, TV table and end table. The plant (Spike, lol) is a start from the plant my hubby and I received as a wedding gift 29 years ago. Daughter #1 also got a start (Harry.) The window treatments throughout the apartment were done with the many yards of tulle I had purchased for the canceled wedding. It made perfect fuss-free window toppers and added punches of color against the white walls.
The apartment is the top floor of an Arts and Crafts style turn of the century home. There's lots of great woodwork and cute little cubby storage areas everywhere. I didn't get photos of the hall - it has a floor to ceiling four door storage area. The kitchen cabinets aren't as old as the house but they are definitely vintage. The little green stand next to the fridge was one of our garage sale purchases after a makeover. She has small appliances, kitchen wraps and cookbooks stored there.
The kitchen isn't big enough for the dining table so that's in the living room. You've seen this set in an earlier post. The rose painting and the pasta one in the kitchen were both painted by my mom. This is daughter #2 BTW. :)
I love how her bedroom turned out. The nightstand was a garage sale makeover as are the bunk bed and lamp. K recovered a comforter with a pretty flannel print and made the throw pillows you see in several of the photos.
The chest of drawers is her old one from home but repainted. The glossy white with chrome hardware is a huge improvement over the old oak laminate and brass hardware. I love paint. :D

The apartment is three bedroom so one room has been turned into an office/study area and roomie will have the third room with the large walk-in closet. K chose the room with the smaller closet that's closest to the bathroom.

Next time I visit daughter #1 I will get photos of her apartment, too. It's fun to show how all the miscellaneous garage sale/consignment shop purchases have come together to make cute starter homes for my girls.

Hope you are all having a wonderful week!

Garage sale makeovers in mini

I found this cup and saucer while garage sale shopping with my oldest a couple of weeks ago. I turned it into a mini garden. For my attempt I think it turned out well. I already have another cup/saucer set from this round of garage sales. I'm going to make some for gifts.
My middle name is Rose so the flowers on this cup are perfect. :)
I found this doily at my favorite consignment shop last week. I like it much better than the previous one for Harriet's bed in the boarding house. The scale is more appropriate and the blue looks good with her wallpaper.
This is the Avon bath oil bottle wash stand I found over the weekend. I added painted touches to the pitcher and bowl and used a brown glaze (several layers) to give a wood effect to the bottle. I love how it looks in the Victorian Cottage bedroom.
The little angel doll also got a makeover. I used her dress to make a pinafore and dressed her in Victorian style. At the moment she's the daughter of the cook/maid for the Victorian Cottage. I'm not sure if this is her permanent home, yet.

Garage sale finds

I found this Willowcrest dollhouse yesterday for $7. This is before I cleaned the exterior.
This is the interior as it was when I bought it. But I know there's potential.
This is after the first cleaning. I have a lot of scraping to do. And a lot of gluing to do - it was put together with hot glue and there are huge drips and places that are no longer attached. There are also a lot of things missing - 2 pieces of roof, the door. The house is partially sided and shingled. This one is gonna take awhile.
Today I found this little doll and washstand. The washstand is an Avon bottle that held bubble bath. It's perfectly scaled.
On the non-mini front I've been working on this dining set for my daughter. Both girls are moving into unfurnished apartments in the fall. We found the table at a garage sale for $2. I repainted the base and glued some laminate that had come loose. The chairs are vintage ones that were given to us years ago. The one on the floor was my daughter's desk chair. The only thing we had to do was repaint the frame to match the table base. I still had some of the plaid fabric and we took a pillow apart to use the coordinating fabric - volkswagon beetles in the same colors as the smilies on the other chair. It's a fun set and only cost $2 plus two cans of spray paint. :)

An interesting day

There I was, happily working away at the saloon (the roof/ceiling is assembled and the interior is finished) when my oldest daughter came home and kidnapped me, lol. She passed several garage sales on the way and wanted to go exploring. Since I still wasn't feeling 100% she drove.

She found a bread machine and a cappuccino maker. We tested the bread machine - yum!

I found these bright orange ceramic toilets that are perfectly scaled for 1:12 dollhouses. The lady gave them to me. I also got a hot pot for those days when the tea kettle takes too long to heat up. :)

Then daughter number 2 calls with a catastrophic computer problem. Hubby's out of town so oldest and I delivered his laptop to daughter 2 and brought hers back so I can have it repaired. We also took her out for a late dinner. That made for a 4 1/2 hour round trip.

I had fun with my girls but this was gonna be the day to finish the saloon. It's only midnight...maybe there's still time. More tomorrow...
