Some days just don't go quite as planned

My planned task for today was to work on the exterior of the house after running a few errands in town. I ended up spending a good part of the day with Daughter#1 and running the errands. By the time I got home I didn't have time for starting a big project so I did a couple of smaller ones instead. The kitchen project was a very simple one. I put in the trim piece to separate the linoleum from the wood floor of the dining room. I also added yet another coat of paint to the stairwell wall and added a trim piece to cover a large slot in the stairwell where the two stories connect. I don't have a photo of that, though.
One of my stops while I was in town was Hobby Lobby. I bought an unfinished hutch and turned the top half into the bookcase for Davy's room. The top shelf will actually hold books. The other shelves showcase some of his favorite things.

If there's time tomorrow I really am planning to work on the exterior. I think it will go fairly quickly if I like the brick I plan to use. I guess we'll find out tomorrow!

A Makeover Story

This is the girls' room in the 70s house. It's a mini version of the room my sister and I shared. The wallpaper was always just "good enough." It wasn't a very good match to the real wallpaper.
At JoAnn Fabrics a week or so ago I found this scrapbook paper. It's very much like the real wallpaper. Woohoo! I repapered the room today and then added some pop star posters of singers my sister and I "loved." ;) There's even a Tiger Beat magazine on the bed.

Then I started thinking about books. I had made a few of our favorites previously but there wasn't a good place to put them. I built the bookcase today and filled it with some of the books we collected - mostly preteen books but they were our favorites. I had the whole Donna Parker series, the Kim Aldrich series and most of the Nancy Drew books. My sister had the Trixie Beldon series and the Bobbsey Twins books. There's also a copy of Little Women which flips over to Little Men and a copy of The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew.
And here's the completed room. I really need to figure out how to put a full wall with a door between the rooms. The sloped roof makes that more challenging. :)

Time for a good story

I followed a tutorial in the December 2010 American Miniaturist to make more books for the bungalow shelves. Gayle Baillargeon shows how to make long sections of books in 1:12 scale in the article. I just made mine much smaller and had to be a little less detailed but they look good and very real. I also made a couple of stand alone books to add some dimension. I had already put several printie books on the shelves. Now I have enough variety to look good, I think.

She must be an attorney!

I think the half scale house office is finished. I think Maria must be an attorney as that bookcase looks to be filled with law books. It looks like I need to color the edge on this side of the desk but other than that I can call one more room complete. I don't think there's anything else that I had in mind for the house. There may be a few more accessories but it's all basically finished. This was a very fun project for me and I learned some new skills as I tried to figure out how to work in the smaller scale. Thanks for following along as I worked and offering so many positive comments. Your encouragement means a lot!
